SELECTION OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ALGONQUIN ANISHINABEG NATION
Due to the great distances separating our communities, and in order to allow for the broadest possible participation among the member communities of the Algonquin Anishinabeg Nation Tribal Council, the Chiefs and representatives of the Nation have agreed to hold the nomination session for candidates to the Nation Council online.
The nomination session will therefore take place starting at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 22. The link to attend the nominations appears on this page — simply click here.
Members who do not have access to the Internet or a computer will be able to attend the nominations from a location made available by their community.
Nomination Session
Starting at 6:00 p.m., the Chief Electoral Officer will explain how the nominations for the five elected positions will proceed. The positions of Grand Chief, Vice-Grand Chief, and the three representatives (Women, Elders, Youth) are to be filled. After the presentation, nominations will open (see the link for how to nominate a candidate). Nominations will close once no further members wish to propose or second a candidate, and a member in good standing has moved to close nominations. It is therefore important for potential candidates to be online from the start of the session.
After the close of nominations, candidates will have the opportunity to address the online members for two minutes to introduce themselves.
Voting
Voting will take place online on the Simply Voting website on December 3 (see the tab on online voting). However, you must register with the Chief Electoral Officer by November 30 in order to be able to vote online. Click on the link “Registration Procedure” to learn more.
HOW TO NOMINATE A CANDIDATE ONLINE
Only members of one of the communities that are part of the AANTC may be candidates for any of the positions up for election, as well as those who will nominate or second their candidacy. These communities are: Apitipi Anicinapek, Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg, Kitcisakik, Lac Simon, Pikogan, Long Point, and Kebaowek. A potential candidate cannot nominate themselves. Another member of one of the AANTC communities must nominate or second their candidacy. It is recommended that those wishing to run find an AANTC member to submit their name and a seconder to support this nomination before the nominations. A member can nominate any eligible candidate during the nominations, but the nominee must be online before the nominations close for the position in question to confirm their acceptance of the nomination.
Likewise, a person interested in being a candidate but who has not asked someone to nominate them may request the floor at the end of the nominations for one of the positions to say that they would like to be a candidate for that position. Members present online may nominate and second this person if they wish. Similarly, a person whose candidacy has been proposed but has not been seconded will still be placed on the list of candidates, and when nominations close, members will again be invited to support their candidacy.
In the absence of a nominator and a seconder, their candidacy will be rejected.
During the nominations, all participants (candidates, nominators, and seconders) will be asked to turn on the camera and microphone of their device and clearly identify themselves by name, indicating the community of which they are a member. They will be asked to send a photo of their status card to clearly establish their eligibility to the following email address: elections@aantc-ctnaa.net or by text to 819-441-8975.
All candidates who accept their nomination for one of the positions must also sign an authorization to verify their criminal record (document available on the AANTC elections website). Please note that individuals convicted of theft, fraud, or violence against others are not eligible to run for office.
These documents are confidential and will be destroyed after the legal period following the elections.
All candidates must complete and sign the form authorizing the Chief Electoral Officer to verify their criminal record. The form to be completed is available here.
Download the criminal record check form
The candidate may take a photo of the completed form and send it to the following email address: elections@aantc-ctnaa.net or send a copy by text to 819-441-8975. This form must be returned before October 29, 2025, at 4:00 p.m.
